Preserving our Resources
Water-proof your basement, drought-proof your garden! Xeriscaping is common-sense gardening practices that reduce water and maintenance costs.
With climbing temperatures, it makes sense to have a garden that can thrive even in the throes of a water restriction.
Here are the main principles to a Xeriscape garden...
PLAN AHEAD
- Plan and design your garden in detail
- Include the type and number of plants you need in your garden
- Keep plants together that have the same water requirements
- Pay attention to light requirements as well
TAKE CARE
- Plan and maintain your garden properly for great results
- Healthy plants are less prone to disease and pests
- Pruning, mowing and maintaining eco-friendly pest control are the best ways to ensure a low maintenance garden.
MULCH BETTER
Adding a layer of mulch around the base of plants will ensure;
- Roots are kept cool
- Evapotranspiration is reduced
- Weeds are kept at bay
Suitable mulches include; decorative stone or pea gravel, or organics such as cedar chips or bark mulch, which decompose and add nutrients to the soil.

- Avoid high spraying water systems
- Much of the water may evaporate before reaching your plantings with these systems
- Use soaker hoses, bubbler emitters or rotary sprinklers instead
- Measure the output of your watering system so you can determine how long you need to water each area of your garden
