Preserving Our Resources & Helping the Environment

Plan
Ahead

Plan and design your garden in detail including the type and number of plants you need.  Keep those that have the same water requirements together and pay attention to light requirements as well.

Take
Care

A well planned and properly maintained garden results in healthy plants that are less prone to disease and pests. Timely pruning, mowing and pest control using environmentally conscientious methods are the best way for a low maintenance, low-waste garden.

Mulch
Better

Add a layer of mulch around the base of plants to keep roots cool and reduce evapotranspiration while keeping weeds at bay. Suitable mulches include decorative stone or pea gravel, or organics such as cedar chips or bark mulch which decompose and add nutrients to the soil.

Edible & Organic Gardening

Not only does growing your own natural and edible garden provide your family with fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables throughout the spring, summer and fall, you will have the peace of mind of knowing exactly how and where your food came from. By using natural solutions in the garden and eating locally grown food we can stay healthy and do our part to help keep our environment green!

Watering: Keep it on
the low-down

Avoid systems that spray water high into the air before reaching the plants. Much of the water may evaporate before reaching your plantings. Use soaker hoses, bubbler emitters or rotary sprinklers instead. Measure the output of your watering system so you can determine how long you need to water each area of your garden.

Basic Gardening Tools

There are a few basic tools that you will always need as a gardener, investing in good quality gardening tools now will pay off in the long run.

Basic Garden Tools
Successful gardening begins with good gardening tools. The proper tools will help you accomplish your projects safely and make your gardening experience more enjoyable. Our staff at Sheridan Nurseries will help you get started.
